Ali Salter St. Louis American mahjong instructor showing off a winning hand of mahjong tiles

Hi, I’m Ali!

Welcome—I’m Ali of Magpie Mahjong, a St. Louis-based American mahjong instructor and player who wants to spread the joy of mahjong in the Gateway City and beyond. I’d love to teach you how to play mahjong!

I’ve always loved games, but I fell in love (hard!) with mahjong because it combines all my favorite things: not just challenging game play but building community with other women, hosting in style, and fostering friendship. Once a social chair, always a social chair. I love helping connect women and gathering friends together (especially with a beautiful tablescape!).

Why “magpie”? My maiden name means “magpie”, and I’ve always identified with those clever, playful birds who love shiny things, puzzles, and socializing. The name took on new meaning when I started to play mahjong—a game named for the birdsong-like twitter of the tiles—and I realized that my favorite qualities of magpies are also my favorite way to play mahjong: smart, social, savvy, and stylish.

Say hello!
